Knowledge-Level Speech Acts

چکیده

In this paper we try to answer the following questions: Is it possible to program solely at the level of an agent communication language? If this is the case, ii) what requirements and conditions need to be taken into account? We argue that, although a number of languages defining abstract communication primitives have been proposed in the past few years, knowledge-level programming can only be supported if a number of careful assumptions on the communication primitives and the underlying architecture are made, including asynchronous communication mechanisms, reliable message passing, and non-blocking primitives. To have a more rigorous understanding of these issues we proceed in a formal way. First, we postulate a set of requirements that an agent communication language should satisfy to be regarded as knowledge-level. These requirements also include some of the typical properties that distributed systems should satisfy in general. Then, we define a weak speech act based language, and we show that a synchronous version of the language does not satisfies requirements for knowledge-level programming. Finally, we show how an alternative asynchronous version of the language can be defined, which avoids the aforementioned problems. To prove these results, we introduce a general framework to reason on communication and concurrency aspects in the context in speech acts based languages. 1. Assessing Language Learners’ Knowledge of Speech Acts: A Test Validation Study

Veryfew attempts have been made in the past to develop instruments to measure pragmatic knowledge of second language (L2) learners. The absence of such instruments in the literature of English language teaching (ELT) underscores the need for the researchers to develop new tests that are specifically designed to assess this crucial but less explored aspect of language learners’ (LLs) knowledge. ...

The Effect of Mixed and Matched Level Dyadic Interaction on Iranian EFL Learners’ Comprehension and Production of Requests and Apologies

Drawing upon sociocultural theory of Vygotsky, the current study aims to investigate the effect of dyadic interaction in mixed and matched level proficiency pairings on comprehension and production of request and apology speech acts. The participants were 125 EFL learners who were randomly assigned to control and experimental (interaction) groups. Based on their scores in the pretest including ...

The Effect of Self-Assessment and Conference on EFL Students’ Production of Speech Acts and Politeness Markers: Alternatives on the Horizon?

Alternative assessment approaches received considerable attention soon after a discontent with traditional, one-shot testing. These approaches, however, have been used only to improve learners’ linguistic ability despite communicative models of language which pointed that knowledge of language also involves pragmatic ability (Bachman, 1990; Bachman & Palmer, 1996). The present study tries to ex...

Modeling Lateral Communication in Holonic Multi Agent Systems

Agents, in a multi agent system, communicate with each other through the process of exchanging messages which is called dialogue. Multi agent organization is generally used to optimize agents’ communications. Holonic organization demonstrates a self-similar recursive and hierarchical structure in which each holon may include some other holons. In a holonic system, lateral communication occurs b...
